The Spire is rising towards Act 2! A sneak peek into new areas 👀
about 2 years ago – Fri, Mar 01, 2024 at 07:01:25 AM

Hey all!

Hope everyone is having a great 2024 so far and I'm keeping all my fingers crossed that it will only get better from here! 🖤

We had a pretty busy start of the year as we started getting deeper and deeper into Act 2 of Rising Spire. The release of Act 1 had us invest a lot of time in building solid systems, cleaning up code, and overall doing backend stuff to ensure that we build the game on solid ground and that we are as efficient as possible going forward.

Afterwards, we moved on to making sure we have all the narrative details of Act 2 and that the visuals we're building make sense. Which is what brings us here to you today, 'cause we're going to share a teeny tiny lil' bitsy of a sneak peek into some of the new areas you will explore as Atlas in Act 2 of Rising Spire.

Most of what we've seen so far was mostly...this.

Lush forests, chill rivers, a bit of a mountain view

Maybe even a bit of this.

There's no 'maybe' in here, the town of Dohan plays a major role in the first act of the game.

Nevertheless, the first part of Rising Spire is rather small one compared to Act 2, which is the beefiest part. This is where the story really starts unfolding, this is where our heroes get to fight, grow, evolve, and...maybe even save the world, who knows?

Without further ado (and doing my best not to spoil anything but locations at this point)...

Swamps, anyone?
Spookier swamps?

We had an absolute blast building the swamps! They're dirty, smelly, extremely dangerous and will have you face some of the worst (in a good way, I swear!) enemies in the game.

However, if you're not into swamps, maybe some clean, rarefied air sounds more appealing? Because yes, spring may be on the way for you and me, but Atlas & Co. are about to taste some snow.

Before you ask, no - we won't give them warm clothing to go to the mountains. They're strong people, they can handle it.

Okay, let's go less extreme and stay in the in-between. The Great Plains of Paelondia are mentioned by the party in Act 1 and that's going to be an early destination going into Act 2. These are some of the biggest maps we've built so far, and the area is pretty massive. More than that, however, it holds a ton of surprises and exciting encounters with both friends and foes. I promised I won't spoil anything but locations, so let me get away with sharing this and not saying anything further about it.

Yes, because the maps are so massive, we had to adjust the camera settings to make it easier to navigate. :D

The seaside area is still in progress, but we're excited to share that with you as well soon! Expect one of the next updates to showcase new enemies and maybe even some information about upcoming boss battles. 👀

As I mentioned before, we're selving into the beefiest, richest part of Rising Spire and we have a lot of exciting things in the pipeline. We'll follow up with updates here on Kickstarter and you can also keep an eye on our Twitter feed for some fresh imagery. Of course, you could also join us on Discord if you haven't already, where you have the chance to see the game being built in real time during live streams.

That's all for today! Remember that if you have any questions, we're just one message away anywhere on social media, so don't hesitate!

All the love,

the LFB Studios team

Act 1 content and polish patch now LIVE on Steam!
over 2 years ago – Fri, Dec 15, 2023 at 03:26:45 PM

Hey friends!

Exciting news today! As this Kickstarter update goes out, the content patch for Act 1 is up on Steam!

We've previously offered a glimpse of what we'd been working on in the last update, and we also have the Patch Notes up on Steam, so I won't bore you with all the tiny details here. Let's go for an overview instead. :D

What you'll find in Rising Spire once you update it on Steam:

  • New content

We're talking new side quests, new dialogue scenes, new boss battles

Don't you also love it when strangers ask you to risk your life without much of an explanation?
  •  Big UI overhaul

From overworld to Player Menu and Battle Menu, the UI received a major facelift. It is now friendlier, more modern looking, and more helpful!

Let's just ignore the fact that Kickstarter is keen on demolishing the quality of every video or gif uploaded, okay?

Some of the updated UI elements in the Player Menu
  •  Overworld visual updates

We shared some more screenshots in the previous update, but the tl;dr is that Dohan received a major visual update, alongside smaller updates to the rest of the maps.

  • Combat

Lots of balancing - all battles should feel tougher, meatier, beefier. Except for the final battle in Arc 1. That one's been nerfed. If you know, you know. 💀

We have new animations and new abilities for regular enemies, new battle backgrounds, and some changes to how the party levels up. Again, we go into more details in the Patch Notes.

  • Miscellaneous

You can now camp at any point to advance the time, Dohan General Goods is there if you want to buy or sell items, the maps are easier to follow and the Journal entries are more helpful in case you need direction to advance the story.

Last but not least, there have been a handful of bugs (both bigger and minor ones) in the previous build that we have now squashed. Your bug reports helped immensely, and we'll be counting on you to report any sort of issue you might encounter with this patch as well.

There are a few known issues we're already working on (quite literally, Frank is working on the next patch as I'm writing this). If you find any bug, don't hesitate to reach out on Discord where we have a dedicated bug report channel. Your help is highly appreciated! 💙

We'll be back soon with more updates and, you know...a look into Act 2, perchance? 👀👀👀

Hope you enjoy the new updates and that you have fun playing! Let us know what you think!

All the best,

The LFB Studios Team

Rising Spire Fall update 🍂
over 2 years ago – Fri, Oct 20, 2023 at 07:03:13 AM

Hey all,

Hope everyone is well, cozy, and enjoying the autumn breeze! It's time for warm tea, fuzzy blankets, carving pumpkins and...updates about Rising Spire! ✨

As we mentioned in a previous update, we're currently working on a content patch for the game's first Act. What this means (besides new content) is also visual updates to stuff that's already out (exciting!) and also lots of boring stuff on how the game's coded. The latter is not very pretty to look at but, if you'd be interested in devlogs from Frank's side, drop a comment and we'll make it happen. :D

But what would be pretty to look at? 👀

Well, how about...

...a little glow up?😎

What started out as a very small and isolate fishing settlement in concept, took shape into a true town, and one with some cozy autumnal vibes no less!

Aaah, nothing screams "charm" quite like a screenshot taken in engine 😇

Pixel art and zooming out are definitely not best friends, so here are some details from the actual game field of view:

*chef's kiss* on the gif quality when uploading to Kickstarter, not gonna lie
More new stuff added!

Putting chickens, pumpkins, and knots experts on the side, get ready because the next big thing comes in the form of...

UI updates 🐱‍👤

Yes, it's happening! We received plenty of feedback regarding the UI (thank you!) and, as such, prioritized it on our endless list of tasks. There are more changes to share and more to come in the future but, for now, I'm excited to present a first glimpse at the new player UI!

Look at this new and sleek player menu! <3

The UI overhaul includes tooltips as well! Part of the feedback we received referenced awkward tooltips positioning on less common screen sizes and ratios. No more! We've reworked the tooltips system entirely and made it not just prettier to look at, but also more responsive, more informative, and less sensitive about your weird screen size. Seriously, what's up with that?

Tooltips now stay where we tell them to stay instead of floating wherever they want

With all this in mind, I want to stress the fact that mentioning the UI updates as being a big thing was no overestimation. We wanted to make sure we're building things properly and for the long-term, which means going back to the foundation of the entire system and strengthening it. It did take a lot of time and resources, and it led to us revisiting the initial update calendar we shared with you previously. The setback is not expected to be major, and we'll be back with the new development schedule in the next update, stay tuned! 💙

Last but definitely not least, just want to put this out there, as we haven't spoken publicly on the matter at all, though we received a couple of questions - we will continue to build Rising Spire in Unity, there is no doubt about it.

By now, Unity has already revisited their proposed pricing plan and the storm calmed down a bit. Whether or not many studios would have been affected by this new policy is irrelevant at this point, as the users' trust has already been broken and that's not easy to undo. That said, we at LFB Studios want to make sure that we use the best suited tools for each project we're working on. For Rising Spire, this means using Unity. If a different project will benefit more from a different engine, we will adjust accordingly. ^^

This will be all for today! We'll be back next time with the updated calendar, more UI screens, more enemies, and overall more updates. Again, if you'd be interested in devlogs as part of the Kickstarter updates, let us know! :D

Take care and have an awesome one!

Quick check-in and a massive thank you!
over 2 years ago – Wed, Aug 23, 2023 at 07:01:53 AM

Hey everyone! 🙌

It's been bit over a month since Rising Spire got its Early Access release on Steam and we wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who played the game, left a review; people who reached out with messages, feedback, and words of encouragement, as well to all the creators who talked about Rising Spire on their socials! It means the world to us! 🙏

We made a list of all suggestions, bits of feedback, and the odd bug reports and we're got to work on the content patch scheduled for later this year! :D

At this time, most of the work done is boring, unappealing lines of code that will make our life easier as the game universe expands and more features and content are added - so not much for the eyes in this update. However, we also have some very very exciting visual updates cooking in the oven that we can't wait to see on the screen (hint: it may or may not have to do with UI 👀)

I'll also use this opportunity to remind you that, should you have any questions about the game, the development process, or your backer rewards (there's been some confusion between Steam keys and Switch codes), you can message us at any time here on Kickstarter, find us on Discord, or shoot us a DM on T̶w̶i̶t̶t̶e̶r̶ X and we'll be there to assist in whichever way needed. 💙

A big, heartfelt THANK YOU once again for the continuous support! We'll come back with more updates about Rising Spire soon!

Happy End of Summer,

the LFB Studios team

over 2 years ago – Fri, Jul 14, 2023 at 10:49:33 AM

It's happening! 😬

As I'm typing this, we have just pushed the release button on Steam for the first Early Access version of Rising Spire.

(tears may or may not have been shed 😭)

✨Rising Spire is now publicly available on Steam!✨

As promised in the last update, we're back with a more detailed version of the Early Access Roadmap, to include more details about the current contents of the game, as well as a deeper look into the next steps.

The closer we are to each milestone, the more detailed the roadmap will be ^^

We want to thank you once again for your continuous support in this journey! It is definitely far from over, as we continue to add new content to the game, until the full tale of Atlas is told.

Please reach out with any feedback, suggestions, comments, or bug reports, we're eager to hear from you! And, of course, once you play the game, we'd appreciate it if you left a review on Steam, as it helps tremendously!! 🙏
